Pausing for Meaning

The tree is decorated for Christmas and tomorrow I will finish the rest of the house and put the boxes away until sometime after Christmas. I might even get them put up before the new year begins, but I’m not going to make you a promise. It is always nice to begin the New Year with a fresh, clean, put back together house after all the hustle and bustle, but I don’t always get around to it.

This year the girls decorated the tree. I think they did a really nice job. When we get around to posting Christmas pics on here, you can decide what you think. We have a few finishing touches so we aren’t ready to unveil their finished work just yet.

It has sounded like Christmas around here for parts of the day. We’ve had Christmas Carols playing off and on…between Justin Bieber and various other popular teen pop stars. And, there have been Christmas movies playing on the tv.

I think there has also been some Christmas shopping taking place on this computer, but I can neither confirm nor deny said shenanigans. Especially since the shopping was being done for me! 😉 (No, I didn’t buy anything for myself, but a child of mine would not let me look at the computer screen and had her dad’s credit card in hand) 🙂

Hustle and bustle!!!

I sure don’t want that to be all that this season is about…or any other season.

A couple of years ago I bought a book, God With Us: Rediscovering the Meaning of Christmas. I found it today while I was unloading the Christmas decoration boxes. I’m about a week behind according to this year’s Advent calendar, but sometimes you just have to start where you are and move forward.

Seems I’ve got a couple of things going on in my life now that could use a good dose of just starting where I am and moving forward.

There are 19 days until Christmas at the writing of this post. May you enjoy every part of this season, no matter where you are on the to-do list or the remembering. And may the real meaning of this season permeate your homes and mine!

Wall Outlet, Extension Cord or Jumper Cable?

Who do you call first to celebrate your victories? Is it the same person you call when life hands you a bowl of lemons and you need someone to share the lemonade with? Who do you call when you just need a shoulder to cry on because those lemons squirted you in the eye?

What makes you tick? What encourages your heart? What makes you come alive?

Where is your safe place? Where do you spend most of your time? Where do you go when you need to fill up your tank? Where do you go when you just need to rest?

How do you fill up?

I went to lunch today with a friend who asked me a question that really pretty much stopped me in my tracks. Well it stopped the wheels in my head from spinning for a second. I didn’t ask her, but I’m pretty sure it caused the deer in the headlights look to come over my face. I’m pretty sure I may have stuttered out my answer because I didn’t really have a good one that didn’t sound pretty rote and rehearsed and like something I’d been told should be the right answer at church. I didn’t really have an authentic answer. The truth is, I’m not sure I really know the answer.

What would you say if someone where to ask you what it looks like for you personally to connect to God as your Source? Like me, you could probably list off a number of ways that you’ve been taught in church would connect you with God. But do those things connect YOU to Him as your source? What really makes your heart beat with His? What does that look like for you when it’s just you and Him? What leaves you breathless in His arms knowing that He is the only One that matters?

I can’t answer that question now and really wouldn’t want to share it with you if I could. Not because I don’t want you to know, but because I want you to have the freedom I have now. The freedom to ponder that question for yourself for a bit.

The question didn’t come out of nowhere. Our pastor had preached a great lesson on Sunday about connecting to God as our Source above any and everything else in life including the good and bad things we sometimes choose to get our fulfillment from. I would share the link to it with you here, but it isn’t available yet. If you want it when it becomes available give me a shout out in the comments section and I’ll hook you up.

I read a book several years ago that has been on my mind for the past couple of weeks. When I say its been on my mind, I’m saying it just keeps hanging around like I’m supposed to pay attention to it.
sacred

I’ve been thinking about some things in it that I want to blog about at some point and still may find my way to that in the near future, but I’m not sure that is why its hanging around. With that book so heavily on my mind and now the new question in my think tank, I’m pretty sure God wants me to consider that question on a very personal level with Him.

Maybe you’d like to ponder this one for a while too…

Make a Trade

Do you have a shield?
One that serves as your defense?
How is it working?

Is your shield laughter?
Laughing when you want to cry?
Making others laugh?

Is your shield shiny?
Perfect and well polished brass?
Always looking good?

Does your shield hold pain?
Blocking out all the feelings?
Nothing in or out?

Place them in His hands.
Place yourself beneath His wings.
He will shield you there.
