Yesterday I found out we do still have prayer in schools…shock! It’s not like it was back in the “prayer in school” days, but it IS still there! It is still prayer! And it is still powerful! I don’t know if it is in all schools in America, but I am willing to bet it is. And if it isn’t in your school it could be if you want it to be.
Just after school yesterday I found out that there is a group of teachers in the elementary school that my daughter attends who regularly pray for our school. They were together yesterday right after school spending time in prayer on a Friday afternoon when they could have been using that time to get their things together to go home from what I am sure was an exhausting day and week. They didn’t do that. They put aside all of the things they had to do and stopped and prayed. I wasn’t there, but I am sure they prayed for the school in Connecticut and those affected there, but I am also sure they prayed for our kids and our school. I don’t know if there is a group of teachers who get together and pray in the Middle School next door, but I would not be at all surprised.
But what if there isn’t? Does that mean there is no prayer in that school? I doubt it…in fact…I know it doesn’t. I know there are teachers in that school who pray and even if they don’t have the opportunity to pray out loud, I know they are praying. There are students in that school who pray even if it is in silence…they pray. There are parents that go into that school…and they pray when they are there.
And what about all the prayers that are prayed for our students and our teachers and our schools in the secret prayer rooms of parents and teachers and administrators? Do those prayers stay in those closets or do they go up to a God who isn’t limited by the walls of a school or the boundaries of public prayer limitations?
So maybe if we are concerned about no prayer in schools, we should change that today and start praying. Maybe the only reason there is no prayer in school is because we are fretting about no prayer in school instead of spending time on our knees praying. Maybe the one who doesn’t want us praying in school has sold us all a big fat lie to keep us from praying. No one can stop your prayer. They may be able to legislate that you not make it a public display but they can’t actually stop you from praying. And before we get all concerned that we aren’t allowed to pray in public, look at this scripture…
6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. – Matthew 6:6
Let’s stop saying there is no prayer and just start praying. There is as much prayer in school as you or I are willing to pray.
